Greater Lyon is building the Schuman Bridge in Lyon, which will link Quai Gillet, in the 4th arrondissement, to the Quai du Commerce, in the 9th. In 2014, it will become Lyon’s fourteenth bridge over the River Saône. The Schuman Bridge links the districts of Croix-Rousse and Vaise and marks the entrance to the city and the conurbation.
The bridge consists of triangular-section arches that have the distinguishing feature of being very slender at their point of origin. Longitudinal box girders are suspended from these arches by means of cables fitted with spherical ball joints. In way of the Central Pier, the arches and longitudinal caissons intersect, forming an atypical bowstring-type bridge design.
